Feed 4 meals a day until 12 weeks, 3 meals until about 6 months, then 2 meals. Daily amount depends on weight: a 4 kg (8.8 lb) puppy under 4 months needs about 1.5 cups of puppy food a day.
Puppy feeding schedule by age
Puppies have small stomachs and big energy needs, so they eat more often than adult dogs. Use this schedule as a guide and follow your vet’s advice if your puppy is very small, very large or has health issues.
| Age | Meals per day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 12 weeks | 4 | Soft or moistened puppy food, evenly spaced |
| 3 to 6 months | 3 | Dry puppy food, same times each day |
| 6 to 12 months | 2 | Move to two meals, small breeds earlier |
| 12 months and older | 2 | Switch to adult food (large breeds around 12 to 18 months) |

How much to feed a puppy
Puppy calories are based on current weight. Multiply the resting energy requirement (70 x kg0.75) by 3.0 for puppies under 4 months and by 2.0 for puppies over 4 months. The cup amounts below assume a puppy food with about 400 kcal per cup, so check your own bag.
| Puppy weight | Under 4 months (kcal / cups per day) | Over 4 months (kcal / cups per day) |
|---|---|---|
| 4.4 lb (2 kg) | about 353 / 0.9 cup | about 235 / 0.6 cup |
| 8.8 lb (4 kg) | about 594 / 1.5 cups | about 396 / 1.0 cup |
| 13 lb (6 kg) | about 805 / 2.0 cups | about 537 / 1.3 cups |
| 22 lb (10 kg) | about 1,181 / 3.0 cups | about 787 / 2.0 cups |
| 33 lb (15 kg) | not typical | about 1,067 / 2.7 cups |
| 44 lb (20 kg) | not typical | about 1,324 / 3.3 cups |
Divide the daily total by the number of meals. A 4 kg puppy aged 3 months on 3 meals gets about 0.5 cup per meal. Large-breed puppies should eat a large-breed puppy formula and stay lean, because growing too fast stresses their joints. Ask your vet to confirm the amount.
Slow down a puppy who gulps
Many puppies inhale food, especially litter mates raised in a crowd. Choose a puppy slow feeder bowl with shallow, gentle ridges so it is easy to use and easy to clean. Our guides on slow feeders for puppies and feeding a fast-eating puppy explain when to start and how to build the habit.
Feeding tips that help
- Feed at the same times every day to build a routine and predictable potty trips.
- Leave the bowl down for 15 to 20 minutes, then pick it up.
- Change food slowly over 7 days by mixing a little more new food in each day.
- Do not free-feed. Measured meals make it easy to spot appetite changes.
- Keep treats to about 10 percent of calories, and use part of the daily kibble for training.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I feed my puppy?
Four times a day up to 12 weeks, three times a day until about 6 months, then twice a day.
How much should a 3 month old puppy eat?
It depends on weight. A 4 kg (8.8 lb) puppy needs about 1.5 cups of a 400 kcal per cup puppy food per day, split into 3 meals.
When should I switch from puppy to adult food?
Around 12 months for most dogs, and 12 to 18 months for large and giant breeds. Ask your vet to confirm.
Can I use a slow feeder for a young puppy?
Yes, once the puppy is eating solid food. Pick a shallow, easy pattern and supervise the first meals.
